The Dave Clark Five - early 1964

The Dave Clark Five were great ambassadors for JMI and Vox from 1964 well into the late 1960s. Dave Clark participated in the launch of the solid state range in 1967.

In 1964 the band was provided with a set of the new single-channel two-input AC50s, a set of custom-made PA equipment, and pre-production "teardrop" guitars.

January and February 1964

Below, photos of the Dave Clark Five, during their residency in late January and early February 1964 at "The Royal", Tottenham (residency 17th January - 23rd February 1964), with a couple of custom JMI PA speaker cabinets. Good colour footage was shot by a Pathe newsreel team (available on the Pathe website).

Vox made sure its logos were prominent everywhere - adding new ones (somewhat hastily) to Mike Smith's organ in places where normally there was none. The cabinets, which both have swivel side stands, look as though they contained two twelve inch drivers.

Shortly before the residency at Tottenham, the band was photographed with a couple of smaller cabinets with Vox swivel side stands - probably 15" speaker units given the apparent depth of the cabinet. But the grille cloth is plain.

March 1964

May 1964

Below, a small article in "Record Mirror" magazine, 30th May, 1964. The Dave Clark Five had been issued with a new set of amplifiers and speakers by JMI in mid January, 1964, first seen at the Tottenham Royal. At least three two-input thin-edged AC50s were provided.

It seems unlikely that JMI came up with (or were asked to come up with) another eight following the damage in Sweden, but some at least must have been allocated. These will probably have been of the new diamond-input thick-box variety, developed by JMI in late March '64.
